Mural
Liberté - 29 x 12' // Medford, MA
This mural came together with a good deal of luck and a lot of support from local businesses and the Medford Arts Council!
As the empty wall space was located on the corner of Magoun Ave. and Spring St. in Medford, MA, I believed that my style -- my love of animals, plants, food, and particularly tropical flora and fauna -- could complement the amazing menu of The Neighborhood Kitchen, right around the corner from the planned mural. The owners of The Neighborhood Kitchen were generous with their time and gave me information and backstory about Haiti, some of its history, its cuisine, and how those two things overlapped. I was particularly interested in the history of 'Freedom Soup' or 'Soup Joumou' and decided to include ingredients from the soup into the mural itself. Lime trees, cabbage, Scotch bonnet peppers, and of course the joumou (squash) are throughout the mural, in addition to other plants and birds native to Haiti. (Some in particular are the flamingo, the Hispaniolan trogon (national bird of Haiti), orchids, and the shaving brush flower.
I'm so thankful to the MAC, all the neighbors who walked by and encouraged me, and for the local businesses who gave me their support.
